Tribeca Film Festival opens with Martin Scorsese, Elton John concert and documentary
The 2011 Tribeca Film Festival kicked off festivities Wednesday (April 20) at the World Financial Center Plaza with an introduction from Martin Scorsese and a concert by Elton John, then a screening of Cameron Crowe's documentary about how Elton and one of Elton's biggest idols Leon Russell collaborated to produce an album. Both the documentary and the album, due out later this year, are titled "The Union."
Crowe tells Rolling Stone that the documentary is "just a hobby project, a labor of love. What was going to be one day of shooting turned into another day into another week into a year."
The festival has World Narrative and Short Film form categories, but also several categories that are strictly about New York - the Best New York Narrative and the Best New York Documentary.
