TV ratings: 'American Idol' tops Wednesday, 'Modern Family' and 'SVU' rise

Wednesday was a fairly good night for broadcast TV, as ABC and NBC were up across the board vs. last week. "American Idol" dropped from its premiere a week ago but improved on its second-episode numbers. "Modern Family" was the night's top scripted show in the 18-49 demo, and "Law & Order: SVU" topped NBC's slate.

The news was not as good at CBS, where both "Criminal Minds" and "CSI" hit all-time lows in adults 18-49. "Arrow" and "The Tomorrow People" dipped a little on The CW.

FOX drew 13.2 million viewers and a 7.8 rating/12 share in households for the night, easily beating second-place CBS (8 million, 5.2/8). ABC (6.5 million, 4.3/7) came in third, and NBC (6.1 million, 3.9/6) took fourth. The CW was at the back of the pack with 1.9 million viewers and a 1.3/2.

FOX also scored a win among adults 18-49 with a 4.0 rating, doubling ABC's 2.0. NBC, 1.7, edged CBS, 1.6, for third, and The CW trailed with a 0.7.
