"Modern Family" followed up its Emmy win with its biggest audience ever on Wednesday, but CBS' lineup was stronger over the course of the night and recorded a ratings victory. The new shows were a mixed bag -- "The Defenders" started pretty well for CBS, and "Undercovers" and "Better With You" did OK, but ABC's "The Whole Truth" struggled.

CBS led the night by a comfortable margin, drawing 12.9 million viewers and a 7.7 rating/13 share in households. NBC (9.5 million, 6.1/10) came in second, beating out ABC (7.9 million, 4.9/8). FOX averaged 6.6 million viewers and a 3.7/6. The CW brought up the rear with 2.6 million viewers and a 1.6/3.

The adults 18-49 title also went to CBS, which scored a 3.6 rating in the demographic. FOX, 2.9, came in second, and ABC and NBC tied for third at 2.8. The CW earned a 1.1.
