Tyler Clementi's roommate Dharun Ravi sentenced to 30 days in jail

dharun-ravi-abc.jpg Tyler Clementi's suicide in September 2010 rocked the pop culture world -- everyone from Ellen DeGeneres to Lady Gaga commented on the tragedy. A student at Rutgers, 18-year-old Clementi jumped from the George Washington Bridge after his roommate broadcasted a sexual encounter between him and another man on the internet. The roommate, Dharun Ravi, also tweeted about Clementi's sex life.

Ravi was found guilty of bias intimidation -- a hate crime that could have carried up a 10-year prison sentence. On Monday, he was sentenced to 30 days in jail. He'll also be required to serve three years' probation, seek counseling, and pay $10,000 toward victims of hate crimes.

"Our society has every right to expect zero tolerance for intolerance," said the judge who assigned the sentence. According to the CS Monitor, Ravi cried as his mother begged the judge not to send him to prison. The prosecutor has vowed to appeal for a harsher sentence.
