'Undateable' creator Bill Lawrence: It's a 'classic throwback sitcom'Add to Favorites | Undateable
"I think this is a classic throwback sitcom. It cracks me the frick up," he tells reporters on a panel discussing the show ahead of its premiere. "It really makes me laugh."
Lawrence started out wanting to do a throwback show reminiscent of NBC's heyday. "I grew up loving and worshiping 'Cheers,'" he says. "I love multi‑camera sitcoms that only have two or three sets and you're watching not only performers have fun with each other and riff and make up stuff on their own, but laugh and enjoy each other. I think these guys pull it off."
Of course, it helps that the cast, comprised mainly of talented standups like Chris D'Elia, Brent Morin and Ron Funches and talented comedic actresses like Bianca Kajlich and Briga Heelan, is incredibly funny.
"Quite honestly, 50 percent of the material you [see], these people made up on stage. They have great comedic voices, and we let them run with the material. Then when people say they like it, we just take credit for it," Lawrence says. "It's the best gig in the world as a writer."
And although the show is about guys dating, Lawrence says the comedy is family-friendly. "I think it is laugh‑out‑loud funny without being that crass," he says.
"Undateable" premieres May 29 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
