Vin Diesel has spent the past couple of months teasing his involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After taking a meeting with the studio, people have guessed that he'll play Ant-Man, The Vision, or even Ultron or Thanos in the film franchise. But it turns out Diesel might be landing a much different role: Groot in "Guardians of the Galaxy."

Speculation began when Diesel changed his Facebook cover photo to an image of the tree-like alien, pictured above. Several hours later, Deadline ran a story confirming that Diesel is in negotiations to play the Guardian of the Galaxy. Groot is one of two primarily CGI characters who needs to be cast in "Guardians," with the other being Rocket Raccoon.

Diesel is no stranger to voice acting, as he also iconically voiced the titular character in "The Iron Giant." It's unclear if the roles of Groot and Rocket Raccoon will include motion capture or simply be CGI, but using Diesel for such a role seems a bit wasted. At least he does have a great voice for the role. Regardless, he will be joining an A-list cast if he takes the part, as everyone from Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista to Benicio del Toro, Glenn Close and Djimon Hounsou is starring in the flick.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" hits theaters on Aug. 1, 2014.
