Virginia Tech gunman dead after killing cop; new tragedy rocks college campus
The Virginia Tech police officer was shot and killed while making a routine -- an unrelated -- traffic stop in one of the college's parking lots, reports local CBS affiliate WDBJ, t. While the unidentified officer was occupied with the traffic stop another man apparently opened fire on him before fleeing the scene. The gunman was later found a quarter of a mile away, dead from a gunshot wound.
According to the University's student newspaper, the Collegiate Times -- whose reporters posted a steady feed of updates and photos via Twitter throughout the incident -- a vigil is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET to honor the fallen police officer. Final exams have also been canceled for Friday, but will resume on Monday as scheduled.
Virginia Tech is, sadly, the site of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. In 2007, 33 people were killed by a gun-wielding student.
