"The Walking Dead" returns to AMC this fall but the cast and crew are already hard at work on the new episodes.

The network has released a new behind-the-scenes featurette with the show's executive producers explaining how they chose Greg Nicotero to direct the upcoming Season 4 premiere and giving us a few teases for what's ahead.

The season premiere is written by new showrunner Scott Gimple and Nicotero promises fans have a lot to look forward to: "There are new [characters] coming in that I'm really excited about. There's some great character turns. There's a lot of really good twists that will really delight the fans"

Nicotero directed four previous episodes of the series including Season 3's penultimate installment "This Sorrowful Life" -- also written by Gimple -- which revealed the sad fate of Merle Dixon.

"The Walking Dead" Season 4 premieres on AMC in October. Season 3 hits DVD and Blu-ray on August 27.
