The Walt Disney Company made a surprising announcement Tuesday (April 23). They are releasing a new cartoon short starring Mickey Mouse. According to the LA Times, the short features the late Walt Disney as the voice of Mickey.
While a statement from the company says the cartoon is never before seen, the studio won't comment on whether it's a new piece, or something that went unreleased. Titled "Get a Horse," the clip is hand-drawn, featuring Mickey and some other familiar faces. A press release says the short "follows Mickey, his favorite gal pal Minnie Mouse and their friends Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow as they delight in a musical wagon ride -- until Peg-Leg Pete shows up and tries to run them off the road."
This is the first new short for Mickey Mouse since 1995's "Runaway Brain," which originally ran in theaters before "A Goofy Movie." That short was nominated for an Academy Award and featured Wayne Allwine as the voice of Mickey.
"Get a Horse" will screen at the Annecy Animation Festival in Annecy, France, on June 11. The company has yet to announce when or if it will be made available for the general public.
