Webb Simpson wins the 2012 U.S. Open golf tournament

Simpson had never before even contended in a major, but put together a 2-under par Saturday and Sunday on a course that was playing very tough all tournament. And that was enough for him to beat out Jim Furyk, who had led from Friday afternoon until the last few holes on Sunday.

It's quite the happy Father's Day for Webb, whose baby James was at home with grandma and grandpa, while his wife Dowd followed him on the course all weekend seven months pregnant.

The golfer was an Arnold Palmer scholarship golfer at Wake Forest, but up until this win, the best he had done at any major tournament was tied for 14th. This is only the third PGA win of his career.

After his round was over (while he waited to see if his lead woudl hold), Simpson told Bob Costas, "It was just a cool day ... I knew it was a tough golf course, I had to go out and do what I could. I prayed more the last three holes than I've ever done in my life, that really helped me stay calm."
