Weird Al's 'Born This Way' parody - did Lady Gaga say no?
Weird Al writes on his blog, "I wrote and recorded what I thought was going to be the first single off of my new album: a parody of "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga called "Perform This Way." But after hearing it, Lady Gaga decided not to give me permission to release the song, so... it won't be coming out commercially anytime in the near future. Sorry."
He also writes, "Based on my concept, I was reasonably sure that my parody wasn't really going to offend anybody... but I still decided, as an act of good karma, that I would donate all the money from sales of the song and music video to the Human Rights Campaign."
Based on Gaga's work for LGBT rights, you'd think she'd have to be in favor of that gesture, so it's weird that she'd say no. But TMZ is reporting that Gaga hasn't said no at all yet - they have a source close to the singer who says, "There must have been a misunderstanding because [Gaga] is in no way trying to block the release of the parody. She's busy touring and hasn't heard the song yet. Her manager hasn't had a chance to play it for her yet. She's a huge Weird Al fan."
You can hear the parody for yourself below. It's interesting that Weird Al is even wanting to get Lady Gaga's permission - parodies are protected under Fair Use, so he doesn't need the permission of the artists whose songs he parodies.
