What's on DVD today: 'Dark Knight Rises,' 'Beasts of the Southern Wild,' 'Butter'
Say what you will about the third and final installment of Christopher Nolan's trilogy, but it's worth a viewing, at least so you can argue about it knowledgeably. Like it or love it, just don't sit it out.
"Beasts of the Southern Wild"
The Sundance Film Festival crowd pleaser follows little Hushpuppy's journey after losing her father. Quvenzhané Wallis generated Oscar buzz with her sweet performance as the six-year-old protagonist. Wallis' Hushpuppy struggles to maintain her innocence and prevent grief from hardening her as she faces the outside world following sheltered beginnings in the Louisiana bayou.
In the vein of "Best In Show" meets "Drop Dead Gorgeous," Jennifer Garner battles it out in a cut-throat butter carving competition with a neighbor's adopted little girl, who is aided by Olivia Wilde as a stripper sleeping with Garner's on-screen husband, Ty Burrell. The film debuted last year at the Toronto Film Festival to mostly negative reviews, but with a cast list that includes Hugh Jackman, Alicia Silverstone and Rob Corddry, can you really go wrong?
