willie-garson-matt-bomer-white-collar-season-5-premiere.jpgWelcome back, "White Collar" fans. The Season 5 premiere has set up a very interesting storyline for the rest of the season, so let's dive right in.

Prison, We Hardly Knew Ye

Neal manages to dispatch Peter's time in prison and get the charges dropped in approximately the first 30 seconds of the episode. That's OK -- "White Collar" is a fun romp of a show and we hardly expected Agent Burke to waste away in prison all season.

A Deal With the Devil

But in doing so, Neal has struck a bargain with the Dutchman, a.k.a Curtis Hagen ( Mark Sheppard), the man behind the forged Spanish Victory Bond from the very first case Neal helped Peter on. In exchange for getting Peter's charges dropped, the Dutchman now has Neal at his beck and call to do various nefarious deeds around the island of Manhattan, starting with stealing $2 million worth of Welsh gold from the Reinhardt Building.

"Ocean's Eleven" meets "Backdraft"

To steal the gold, Mozzie pretends to be a suicidal jumper in order to get the fire department called -- to the building next door. Neal masquerades as a fireman and gets into the vault containing the gold through the wall of the building they had to clear when Mozzie's man-on-a-ledge stunt was called in.

Oh, and how did they do this with Neal's anklet tracking his every move? Why, Mozzie finally hacked the anklet, of course. The FBI only sees Neal sitting in his apartment for four hours and later, he cleverly explains this away as having been sitting and painting a picture the whole time. Heh.

The heist goes swimmingly, until the gold ends up carted back to the firehouse. Now Neal has to pretend to "work" the case with the FBI team, offering them hints as to how "someone" might have stolen the gold. He and Peter go to the firehouse to investigate and Neal manages to get the gold out to Mozzie -- fire hose to baby pram, the perfect method.

However, the Dutchman has video of Neal stealing the gold and now Neal is his to make do whatever he wants.

Thoughts & Tidbits

  • Diana's pregnant! That's a lot of fun. "His father is a world-renowned chef with a sky-high IQ." Heh.

  • Agent Burke is also done being Neal's handler. He's received a promotion to ASAC (Assistant Special Agent in Charge) and that means a new handler is being brought in -- not only because of the promotion but also because Burke is no longer impartial when it comes to Neal anymore. Intriguing.

  • And what comes with the new handler? A new un-hackable anklet. Drats.

  • Best line:

Mozzie: "On top of your new yet-to-be-determined FBI handler, you now have a criminal handler to deal with?"
    Neal
: "It's worth it to get Peter back."

We can't wait to see what all criminal activities the Dutchman has in store for Neal this season -- and how he and Mozzie are going to pull them off under the noses of Burke and now the new handler. Should be a lot of fun.
