The lead role in Lifetime's upcoming Whitney Houston biopic has been cast, and Yaya DaCosta has been cast as the iconic and tragic singer.

As reported by TVLine, the film will document Houston's rise to fame and her turbulent relationship with Bobby Brown throughout that time. Angela Bassett is set to direct the made-for-TV-movie, which is expected to be released in 2015.

First hitting the limelight in "America's Next Top Model" Cycle 3, DaCosta has had a busy acting career in TV shows like "House," "All My Children" and "Ugly Betty." Her most recent role was in 2013's Oscar-nominated "Lee Daniels' The Butler."
