The trailer for "Sparkle," the Jordin Sparks-fronted movie that co-stars Whitney Houston in her final on-screen performance, debuted Monday (April 2) on "Today."

Houston plays Sparks' mother in the movie, which is a remake of the 1976 Supremes movie about a girl group -- ala Supremes -- who struggle to make their way on to the pop charts. Houston's character appears funny, warm and there's no sign of the off-screen struggles she may have been having with substance abuse.

Houston died in February, she was found dead in her Beverly Hills hotel room after having drowned in the tub. Traces of cocaine were found in both her system and the room.

The film is due in theaters Aug. 17.
