The reasons behind showrunner Frank Darabont's exit from "The Walking Dead" are still largely shrouded in mystery, but a new article in The Hollywood Reporter fills in some of the details surrounding his departure.

According to anonymous sources cited in the article, Darabont was fired by AMC execs in late July and the move came as a surprise to cast, crew and Darabont himself. The show's principal actors and crew were informed in separate meetings about Darabont's departure and replacement by lead writer Glen Mazzara.

According to those anonymous sources, AMC is working overtime to discourage anyone attached to the show from talking about Darabont's exit. At Comic-Con, actors including Sarah Wayne Callies, Jon Bernthal and Andrew Lincoln talked about Darabont in almost reverent terms -- about the environment he'd created and the attention to detail going in to each episode.
