Will Ferrell joining 'The Office' full time, unless he's kidding

will-ferrell-comedy-awards.jpgHey, did you hear? Will Ferrell is joining "The Office" for good next season!

Unless he's not.

The source of the "Office" gossip is Ferrell himself, who told EW at the taping of the Comedy Awards over the weekend that "I'm taking over. My character's name is Deangelo Vickers" -- that part's true -- "he loves the American Southwest, and he's just kind of in his own way going to step into Michael Scott's shoes and try to fill them."

He added that he initially pitched guesting on just one episode of the show, but the "Office" team came back with an offer for four episodes. He said yes, and now, according to him, those four episodes have become "a regular, full-time gig."

If that's true, it would be a huge get for the show. Going into Steve Carell's last season, few people would have guessed he'd be replaced by an even bigger star. But forgive us if we're juuust a little more skeptical about Ferrell's claim than most of the other breathless reports about his Comedy Awards quotes have been.

For starters, Ferrell is really good at keeping a straight face while saying things that aren't necessarily true. And as EW notes, both an NBC source and someone close to Ferrell dismissed the idea, and an "Office" insider says that "Will was likely joking, but time will tell."

We're withholding judgment on whether Ferrell will be good for "The Office" until we actually see him on screen on April 14. But how does the idea of Ferrell as a regular on the show strike you?
