William Shatner wakes Discovery crew with meta message

No one excels at glorious self-parody quite like William Shatner. "Star Trek's" original Captain James T. Kirk is still milking the role he first played in 1966.

The latest fans to benefit from Shatner's humor are the crew of the U.S. Discovery space shuttle, which undocked from the orbiting International Space Station for the last time on Mar. 7.

Spaceflight Now reports that as they woke that morning, the opening theme from "Star Trek" began to play -- and Shatner had made a slight alteration to his classic narration.

"Space... the final frontier," he said. "These have been the voyages of the space shuttle Discovery. Her 30-year mission: to seek out new science, to build new outposts, to bring nations together on the final frontier, to boldly go and do what no spacecraft has done before."

The Discovery's 30-year tenure as a NASA shuttle comes to an end this Wednesday, Mar. 9, when the crew are scheduled to land back at the Kennedy Space Center.
