Zac Efron shakes teen roles for drugs and crime in 'Snabba Cash'

zac-efron-getty3.jpg Zac Efron dropped out of the lead in "Footloose" to avoid being typecast as the musicals guy -- so he's done a 180 to make sure the world knows he has range.

Efron will play a money launderer (do "Highschool Musical" fans even know what that is?) in a gritty plot involving drugs and organized crime in the remake of "Snabba Cash."

According to THR, the 22-year-old will star in and produce "Snabba," a thriller based on a novel by Jens Lapidus. The book was a major hit in its home country of Sweden, and the film project became the subject of a heavy Hollywood bidding war.

Warner Bros. ended up being the last studio standing and bought the rights for Efron to produce.
