John Travolta Taking on 'Pelham 123'

Fresh off the remake of "Hairspray," John Travolta is turning to the revamp of a more serious film.

The Oscar-nominated actor is in negotiations to star in the Tony Scott-directed remake of "The Taking of Pelham 123," reports Variety. He'll join Oscar winner Denzel Washington in the suspense drama.

Based on the 1974 Joseph Sargent film, "Pelham" will star Travolta as the leader of a group of NYC subway train hijackers who are demanding a ransom for the lives of the passengers. Washington will portray the subway's chief detective of security. Robert Shaw and Walter Matthau played the same roles respectively in the original film.

Production on the project written by David Koepp will begin in early 2008.

Travolta recently starred in the Disney comedy "Wild Hogs" and as the gender-bending Edna Turnblad in "Hairspray."
