'Dreamgirls' Star Joins 'Ladies' Detective Agency'

Anika Noni Rose is ready to become a sleuth.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "Dreamgirls" co-star has snagged one of the lead roles in "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency," Oscar winner Anthony Minghella's adaptation of the Alexander McCall Smith bestseller.

The trade paper says that Rose will play Grace Makutsi, secretary and detective assistant to Precious Ramotswe (previously announced Jill Scott).

Also new to the cast is Lucian Msamati ("MI:5") as Ramotswe's fiance.

Minghella co-wrote the script with Richard Curtis and will produce along with Sydney Pollack for the Mirage Prods. shingle. The film is set up at the Weinstein Company.

Rose recently booked the vocal lead in the Disney animated musical "The Princess and the Frog." Currently on the small screen in USA's "The Starter Wife," Rose won a Tony in 2004 for the musical "Caroline, or Change." She played Lorrell Robinson in last winter's Oscar-winning "Dreamgirls," a far cry from her first major big screen turn in 2003's "From Justin to Kelly."
