Couple has been seeing each other since 2006

Singer-actress Ashlee Simpson and Fallout Boy bassist Pete Wentz intend to make beautiful music together as husband and wife.

The tabloid-friendly couple announced Wednesday, April 9 that they are engaged on FriendsorEnemies.com.

"We know there has been a lot of speculation recently about Pete and I, and we wanted our fans to be the first to know, because you guys are the best," said the couple in a joint statement. "Yes, we are thrilled to share that we are happily engaged. Thank you for all of your support and well wishes –- it means the world to us. We consider this to be a very private matter, and we wanted to be the first to tell you and to hear it straight from us."

No other details about the engagement or a wedding date have been released.

People reports that Simpson's father Joe is "excited to have Pete as part of [our] family."

Simpson, 23, and Wentz, 28, first knew each other as friends since they were both dating other people. They began seeing each other in late 2006 and have been going strong since.

Simpson's third album, "Bittersweet World," is set to drop on April 22.
