'Harry Potter' Star Goes Nude, Tortures Horses on Broadway
Daniel Radcliffe rides 'Equus' from London
The British lad will take off his glasses and much more for his American nude debut in the revivial of "Equus," Peter Shaffer's disturbing psychodrama.
The play, which originally opened in London's National Theatre in 1973, centers on 17-year-old Alan Strang (Radcliffe) who seemingly without provocation blinds six horses with a metal spike in a stable in Hampshire. Psychiatrist Martin Dysart is sent in to investigate what prompted Alan to commit the atrocity, but in the process, begins to question his own integrity and what constitutes "normal."
Radcliffe, 18, debuted "Equus" in London's West End in February 2007 to packed crowds eager to see the "Harry Potter" star's nearly 10-minute nude scene in which Alan rides a horse naked while simulating sexual ecstasy.
Radcliffe will reunite with his mean "Harry Potter" Uncle Vernon, played by actor Richard Griffiths, who will portray the conflicted Dysart. A 1977 film adaptation starred Richard Burton as the psychiatrist and Peter Finch as the troubled youth.
The show will begin previews beginning Sept. 5 and hold its opening night Sept. 25, running for a total of 22 weeks.
Radcliffe last appeared on the big screen in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," the fifth installment of the film franchise based on the best-selling children's series by J.K. Rowling. The sixth part will hit theaters in November. Fans needing a more immediate fix can check out his mustache on April 20 on PBS' interpretation of "My Boy Jack" in which he plays the titular son of Rudyard Kipling.
