Fiancee David Otunga was a suitor on 'I Love New York 2'

Jennifer Hudson wasn't so lucky in love in her Oscar-winning performance in "Dreamgirls," but luckily her life doesn't imitate art.

The former " American Idol" finalist and her boyfriend David Otunga were enaged on Friday, Sept. 12 in Los Angeles, reports People.

The proposal, complete with a Neil Lane diamond ring, coincided with Hudson's 27th birthday.

Otunga is known as "Punk," one of the suitors on the reality dating show "I Love New York 2."

Hudson broke off a longterm relationship with James Payton in December 2007. She and Otunga, both from Chicago, have been dating less than a year.

Hudson's debut solo album drops on Sept. 30, and her next film, " The Secret Life of Bees," opens on Oct. 17. She also made an appearance in the " Sex and the City" movie.
