Paul Newman 'Doing Nicely,' Evades Cancer Question
No confirmation if actor is dying from lung cancer
"Newman says he's doing nicely," rep Jeff Sanderson announced Tuesday, June 10. "He says he's doing nicely, and this is the statement I wanted to share with you, and that's what I have. I spoke to his office [in Connecticut]. This is the statement that came directly from him."
Numerous media outlets have reported that Newman, 83, has been diagnosed with lung cancer and is undergoing treatment at a medical center in Manhattan. Reports about his "terminal lung cancer" and miniature obituaries have followed.
Adding fuel to the dire cancer rumors are Newman's latest actions. In 2007, he announced his retirement from acting and last month, he withdrew as director of a Connecticut stage production of John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men," citing unspecified health issues.
Newman, a former chain smoker, recently made a public appearance at the 7th annual Polo for Children luncheon to benefit his Hole in The Wall Gang Camp or kids battling severe diseases. He posed for photos, which can be seen on Martha Stewart's blog.
Newman received a best actor Oscar for his leading role in "The Color of Money." His last role was the voice of Doc Hudson in Pixar's animated "Cars."
