Justin Chambers sought help for sleep loss

Justin Chambers is opening up about the condition that landed him in a psych ward earlier this year.

The "Grey's Anatomy" actor addressed the sleep disorder that has been plaguing him and what finally made him seek help, reports People.

"It's an issue that I've had for a while," says Chambers, 37. "It's a biological sleep disorder. Your mind keeps racing, and your body is tired. It wants to go to sleep, but it can't."

Chambers, a married father of five, explains that for the two months before checking into the UCLA Medical Center on Jan. 28, he was getting at most an hour of sleep a week.

"I got to my wit's end," he says.

Insomnia, a sleep disorder in which a person has difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, can impair a person's ability to function.

Chambers plays Dr. Alex Karev on "Grey's Anatomy." His other credits include "Cold Case," the TV movie "Hysterical Blindness" and on the big screen, "Liberty Heights" and "The Wedding Planner."
