Being offered in a Criterion Collection edition, this seasonal French drama matches some recent American holiday tales by incorporating more than a little edginess.

Screen legend Catherine Deneuve plays the cancer-stricken matriarch of a family that has a tense Christmas reunion, especially since the only relative who might save her (Mathieu Amalric, "Quantum of Solace") has been cast out from the clan.

Also in the cast is Chiara Mastroianni, the real-life daughter of Deneuve (by actor Marcello Mastroianni). *** (Not rated: AS, P)
