William Petersen remained on hand for the start of the season, but his Gil Grissom departed the forensics lab several episodes in, paving the way for Laurence Fishburne to join the cast as criminologist Ray Langston – who started as an entry-level CSI, prompting him to seek guidance from Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) and the other veterans.
