There aren't a lot of television series that merit the set number getting this high, but the saga of the Ewing family of the Texas ranch Southfork certainly reached that threshold (with two more seasons afterward). Here, the focus is on master schemer J.R. ( Larry Hagman) getting his comeuppance – if that’s really possible – as his antics earn him a prison-farm stay and a possible movie version of his life story, which he’s not too thrilled about.

Other continuing cast members include Linda Gray and Barbara Bel Geddes (who returned to the role of Miss Ellie). *** (Not rated: AS, P, V)
