'Shutter Island'

Veteran director Martin Scorsese shifts into "thriller" mode by reuniting with star Leonardo DiCaprio for this evocative adaptation by Dennis Lehane ("Mystic River"). The actor plays a personally haunted federal marshal whose psyche isn't helped by his trip with a fellow lawman (Mark Ruffalo) to an island-based asylum that an inmate (Emily Mortimer) has vanished from.

Authorities at the facility ( Ben Kingsley, Max von Sydow) are only mildly helpful, forcing the investigators to work largely on their own - racing against time because a hurricane is on the way.
