Stephen Chbosky's own adaptation of his novel is a heartfelt, beautifully played treat. Logan Lerman plays a high-school freshman who feels completely out of step with others, until two stepsiblings (Emma Watson, Ezra Miller) make him a living project of sorts, steering him through many coming-of-age rites - not the least of which is first love.

A fine supporting cast that includes Mae Whitman, Kate Walsh ("Private Practice"), Dylan McDermott, Melanie Lynskey, Paul Rudd and Joan Cusack backs the central performers. *** (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
