'Wall-E' (Three-Disc Special Edition)

'Wall-E' (Three-Disc Special Edition)

"Wall-E" is art. Not only is the story compelling -- and amazingly emotional, considering its stars are mechanical -- but several sequences are outright beautiful. (Witness Wall-E's trip through space on the back of a recon rocket.) It's easily the best purely family film, appealing to family members of all ages, in the past couple of decades. On DVD, the film is just as beautiful as on the big screen without losing any of its heart. This is the movie kids and adults alike would be happy to unwrap for the holidays.

DVD New Releases

'Tropic Thunder' (Unrated Director's Cut): "Tropic Thunder," a war-movie satire that skewers everything Hollywood, is a welcome addition on DVD: While its release was overshadowed by criticism, the humor is sly and sharp and worthy of standing alongside classics like "Airplane!" While the unrated director's cut may be only marginally different from the theatrical version, the included extras are worth the price of admission. (Robert Downey Jr.'s brilliant performance as Aussie Kirk Lazarus playing African-America Lincoln Osiris is worth the price of admission on its own merits.)

The first disc features only the film and commentaries (one from the filmmakers, the other by Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr.). The second disc is where the bonus fun can be found: production diaries, deleted scenes, an alternate ending and a mock making-of feature called "Rain of Thunder."

DVD Bonus Features:

The Good: Other than the movie itself, one of the funniest of this young century? It's easy to forget how much work can go into comedy, but the production diaries shed some great light on the process. The cast commentary is funny, if mostly unenlightening.

The Bad: After the belly laughs of the main event, the attempted humor in "Rain of Thunder" is only marginally amusing. (There is one great reference to Jack Black's "Heat Vision and Jack.") Unfortunately, it continues in "Dispatches from the End of Madness," quick vignettes not included in the main mockumentary. And did we say the cast commentary was funny? We meant other than Downey doing the entire thing as Lincoln Osiris.

The Price: $34.98
'Wall-E' (Three-Disc Special Edition): "Wall-E" is art.

Other than the movie, the first disc also contains two shorts, "Burn-E" (about a welder droid briefly seen during the main feature) and the unrelated but amusing "Presto" (the story of a magician and his rabbit), deleted scenes and features about the production. The second disc is packed with extras, from behind-the-scenes looks to Buy N' Large commercials. The third disc is a digital copy of the movie.

DVD Bonus Features:

The Good: The movie looks amazing, as do the included shorts. "Presto," though, feels out of place among all the robotic content. The second disc is nicely split between "Humans" (in-depth features appealing more to film fans) and "Robots" (fun content for younger audiences).

The Bad: Kids won't find much of interest among the extras: Aside from the shorts, they'll find a humorous short of Wall-E and friends playing with his scavenged items, plus a look at the different robots and an interactive storybook.

The Price: $39.99
"Kung Fu Panda"
"Kung Fu Panda": The title character doesn't know martial arts when the movie begins, but that changes fast in this fun, animated comedy-adventure featuring the voice of Jack Black in the main role. Po is in the wrong place at the wrong time when he is selected to learn combat skills from masters â and he must do so quickly to stave off a threat from an enemy snow leopard. The excellent voice cast also includes Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu and Ian McShane. The film is packaged with the new "Secrets of the Furious Five," also featuring vocals by Black and Hoffman. DVD extras: six "making-of" documentaries; audio commentary by cast and crew; music video; "Video JukeBox"; animal-conservation featurette; Web links. *** (PG: AS)
"Star Wars: The Clone Wars"
"Star Wars: The Clone Wars": The interstellar action is animated in this George Lucas-sanctioned chapter in the saga, which served as a theatrically released prelude to a Cartoon Network series. Anakin Skywalker (voice of Matt Lanter) leads a young Jedi Knight-in-training (voice of Ashley Eckstein) on a mission to rescue the kidnapped son of Jabba the Hutt. Samuel L. Jackson, Christopher Lee and Anthony Daniels (as C-3PO, of course) are among veterans of the live-action films also in the voice cast here. DVD extras: theatrical trailers; three "making-of" documentaries; deleted scenes; art gallery; "Webisodes;" digital copy of the film. *** (PG: AS, P, V)
"This Christmas"
"This Christmas": Somewhat reminiscent of "Soul Food," this holiday tale casts Loretta Devine as the head of a family with six grown children (Regina King, Sharon Leal, Lauren London, Idris Elba, Columbus Short, Chris Brown). It doesn't take long for their reunion to generate an array of complications and hurts, but the underlying message remains that there's nothing like loved ones to help you through rough spots. Mekhi Phifer and Delroy Lindo also appear. DVD extras: "making-of" documentary; audio commentary by King, Leal and London; deleted scenes; music video. *** (PG-13: AS, P)
"The Perfect Holiday"
"The Perfect Holiday": It's a big week for seasonal releases, among them this romantic comedy about a youngster (Khail Bryant) who tries to play matchmaker for her mother (Gabrielle Union). Santa might be the answer -- at least a department-store Santa (Morris Chestnut) who has his own wish list, true love being one of the entries on it. Queen Latifah, who co-produced the film, also is in the cast; so are Terrence Howard, Faizon Love and comic Katt Williams. DVD extras: "making-of" documentary; audio commentary by cast and crew members; video diaries. *** (PG: AS, V)
"M Squad: The Complete Series"
"M Squad: The Complete Series": Lee Marvin had been a reliable supporting player in movies, but he was made a star by this tough-minded late-1950s police series that cast him as Lt. Frank Ballinger, a Chicago cop who tackled all sorts of cases. The filmed-on-location drama also was a vehicle for such guest stars as Charles Bronson (who would work with Marvin again in "The Dirty Dozen") and Burt Reynolds. Among the music contributors were Count Basie and John Williams. DVD extra: soundtrack CD. *** (Not rated: AS, V)
"Hellboy II: The Golden Army"
"Hellboy II: The Golden Army": This slightly belated fantasy-adventure sequel turns out to have been worth the wait. It boasts the visual flourish of "Pan's Labyrinth" filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro, who keeps the unusual sights coming as the bizarre but well-meaning Hellboy (heavily made-up returnee Ron Perlman) opposes other strange beings and their pursuit of power. Selma Blair (NBC's new "Kath & Kim") and Doug Jones also are back. *** (PG-13: AS, P, V)
