On the Set of 'Because I Said So'
Mandy Moore, Lauren Graham and Piper Perabo bond on the set of their new comedy
The women of "Because I Said So," a new romantic comedy from Universal, are in the process of shooting their second nuptial of the afternoon. In the course of an hour, the lawn of a private Pacific Palisades residence has gone from bedecked in fruits and flowers for a ceremony with a blood-orange color scheme to a classical black-and-white design. The table clothes have been swapped, the ornate cakes replaced. The extras have been redressed and stars Mandy Moore, Lauren Graham and Piper Perabo are in carefully tailored new dresses.
All of this marital merriment must be an act of wish fulfillment for the three young actresses, right?
"That is such a typical question you'd ask girls in a girl movie," cracks Graham.
"Because I Said So" is, indeed, a bit of a girl movie. Diane Keaton plays an overzealous mother who decides to take a more active role in her youngest daughter's (Moore) social life and makes it her mission to track down Mr. Right. Graham and Perabo play the older sisters of Moore's character, willing accomplices in their mother's plans.
"It's fun, so when you find work like this, you gravitate towards it and feel lucky to be a part of it and lucky to work with cool people and cool women," Moore says. "It's a very female oriented set, from hair and makeup to you guys to producers and the writers and stuff. It's the girl power thing. Very Spice Girls."
Graham, sitting nearby, leans over and provides a voice-over, "Moore later regretted calling it 'Very Spice Girls' and called her publicist to retract the statement."
Playing along, Moore goes into a prima donna voice, "Please take out the Spice Girls statement."
Although everybody on set references the accelerated production schedule for "Because I Said So" (shooting began in December and the film is still circling release dates), the three actresses have clearly found time to establish a rapport. Asking about bonding activities, though, launches a lengthy dialogue.
Graham: It grew through discussions of eBay and it had mainly to do with eBay.
Perabo: And we all have a crush on the same...
Graham: Do we want to put that in print?
Moore: We don't have to say who it is.
Perabo: Never mind I said anything. I just broke the whole sister bond right there answering your question.
Moore: You did. You're kicked out.
Moore [trying to bring the conversation back full-circle]: We really didn't have a lot of prep time or rehearsal, we just jumped into it, but it was kind of easy. You guys are very easy to get along with ...
Perabo: Oh, Double M.
Graham reflects a little bit more seriously on the difficulties of shooting a studio movie on an independent budget and schedule.
"This has been very quick pace," says Graham, who have had to fit her "Said So" days in around her "Gilmore Girls" calendar. "We have a lot to do. We're working with Diane who is extremely quick and ready and prepared. We have had a nice a really nice time hanging out, but it feels like work. It feels like work in a beautiful place and it's a great subject and a great story."
The production hasn't been all dating awkwardness, wedding bells and baby showers. When the film's producers made the not-so-shocking discover that all of their leading ladies could carry a tune -- you may have heard of Moore's side career in music -- new scenes were written in to showcase their A-list pipes. The gals have already recorded versions of "It's Alright" and "I Met Him on a Sunday," but they aren't satisfied.
Graham enthuses, "We have very different voices, so it works to do harmony. For me, there's not enough music in it. I would like to turn this into a musical."
"Let's do it!" Moore chimes in.
"We still have time," Perabo adds.
With that, the women are called back in front of the camera. It's time for another set of vows.
