'Milk' Does Three Co-Stars Good
Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch and James Franco close to joining Sean Penn
The Gus Van Sant-directed biopic of the late San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk is also close to adding James Franco.
"Milk," the first of a pair of competing films about one of the nation's first openly gay elected public officials, is set to begin production next month.
Brolin will play Dan White, a fellow city supervisor who shot and killed Milk (Penn) and San Francisco mayor George Moscone at City Hall in 1978.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hirsch would play Cleve Jones, a gay rights activist who served as Milk's intern, while Franco would play his lover and campaign manager Scott Smith.
Dustin Lance Black wrote the script for "Milk," expected to shoot in San Francisco.
Brolin's busy fall has included supporting roles in "American Gangster" and "In the Valley of Elah," plus a lead in the acclaimed "No Country For Old Men."
"Alpha Dog" and "The Girl Next Door" star Hirsch toplined Penn's "Into the Wild" and will next be seen in a little film called "Speed Racer."
Franco also appeared in "Elah," plus the summer hit "Spider-Man 3." He has "The Pineapple Express" set for next summer.
