Just keep telling yourself 'It's only a remake'

Relevant Entertainment has devoured the remake rights to "Cannibal Holocaust," one of the most controversial films of its time.

Directed by Ruggero Deodato, "Cannibal Holocaust" focuses on a anthropologist who heads into the Amazon to find out the truth about a group of filmmakers who vanished while working on a documentary. Once there, he discovers several reels of increasingly disturbing footage.

Shot in a jittery, documentary style, "Cannibal Holocaust" immediately gained notoriety for rumors that it was actually a snuff film. Deodato was supposedly arrested on obscenity charges before proving that all of his actors had returned unharmed. Several animals, however, weren't so lucky, earning the film outrage from animal rights groups.

All of the tumult and bannings have made "Cannibal Holocaust" a cult sensation in certain circles and allegedly massively profitable, though specific box office figures are pretty tough to verify.

The "Cannibal Holocaust" remake will be produced by Michael Menchel and Steve Whitney of Relevant, with Keith Previte of Scorched Earth Entertainment and Catherine Williams providing financing, according to Variety. Executive producers will include Paul Mason, Jordan Rush and Larry Joackim.
