The wait for 'Prince Caspian' will last until summer 2008

Disney has shifted "Prince Caspian," the sequel to "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" from a proposed winter 2007 release date, leaving that holiday season open for a different Walden Media children's film.

According to the industry trade papers, Disney's decision to push the C.S. Lewis-based "Prince Caspian" to a summer 2008 slot was based on the need for additional production time.

However, The Hollywood Reporter notes that Disney decided to grab those extra six months of production cushion (plus six extra months of awkward puberty for the film's young stars) very shortly after Sony announced plans to release "The Water Horse" on Dec. 8, 2007, just one week before "Caspian" was set to premiere.

"The Water Horse" is based on the book by Dick King Smith and will be directed by Jay Russell ("The Mask"). Like "Prince Caspian," its produced by Walden Media, which couldn't have seen any advantage in releasing two kid-friendly epics in the same season.

"Sony and Walden wanted to announce 'Water Horse' and the best we can do is move into summer, which will open up the holiday frame that Walden wanted," Dennis Rose, Disney's senior vice president for publicity, told the HR.
