'The Golden Compass' director will replace Catherine Hardwicke

Chris Weitz will be howling at the "New Moon."

The "Twilight" sequel lost director Catherine Hardwicke last week, but Variety now says Weitz will take her place behind the camera. Weitz is no stranger to otherworldly films: He helmed "The Golden Compass," the 2007 adaptation of Philip Pullman's fantasy novel.

Hardwicke reportedly disagreed with the fast production turnaround for "New Moon" and parted ways, however voluntarily, with producers Summit Entertainment.

The book "New Moon" forces vampire Edward and mortal teen Bella to get even angstier over their love while dealing with an outbreak of werewolves. As of Dec. 14, the first movie has pulled in $150.1 million domestically.
