'Dark Knight' Still Bright Overseas
"The Dark Knight" holds off "Mummy" sequel and "Mamma Mia!"
According to the industry trades, the DC Comics adaptation brought in another $34 million international for the weekend ending Sunday, Aug. 24, staying strong even as "The Dark Knight" has slipped into fourth place in the United States.
"The Dark Knight" is currently playing in 62 foreign markets on a whopping 7,700 screens. The estimated $34 million weekend brings the international cumulative box office to $381.2 million. Added to its $489 million domestic total and "The Dark Knight" currently stands in 13th place all-time with a worldwide total of $870 million.
Second place for the weekend went to "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," which made $12.8 million playing on 6,200 screens. The "Mummy" sequel has made a healthy $222.4 million foreign.
"Mamma Mia!" was a close third with a $12.5 million foreign weekend, having taken in a rather astounding $232.5 million foreign to day.
"You Don't Mess With the Zohan" was fourth, bringing its foreign total to $56.6 million with a $10.5 million weekend. "Wall-E" was fifth with $8.7 million, for a foreign total of $163 million.
