'Dark Knight' Domination Spreads Overseas
Christopher Nolan sequel has already past 'Batman Begins' in worldwide box office
Expanding to 43 territories and playing on 7,143 screens in its second weekend in international release, "The Dark Knight" took in $65.6 million for the three-day period ending Sunday, July 27.
After finishing second to "Hancock" last weekend, "The Dark Knight" didn't just dominate the overseas marketplace, it outgrossed the combined weekends for the next four films, the industry trades report.
"The Dark Knight" now has a foreign cumulative gross of $126.3 million. Added to its $314 million domestic total (in only 10 days) and the Batman sequel has already taken in $440 million worldwide. The scary thing is that although "The Dark Knight" had its United Kingdom opening over the weekend, and ruled the U.K with $22.3 million, Warner Brothers has held off on several key European and Asian territories until August.
It seems almost redundant to mention this, but "The Dark Knight" also passed the total worldwide gross for its predecessor, "Batman Begins," which did just over $371 million in its first worldwide run.
"Hancock" fell to second overseas with $19.2 million on 7,563 screens, pushing its foreign total to $294.6, just under the $305 million foreign total for "Kung Fu Panda," which added another $17.8 million international for the weekend.
"Mamma Mia" and "X Files: I Want to Believe" followed, rounding out the Top 5.
