'The Notebook' star will join Rachel Weisz

Recent Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling has booked the male lead in Peter Jackson's adaptation of "The Lovely Bones."

DreamWorks won the rights to "The Lovely Bones" after a lengthy auction process and production is set to begin in October in Pennsylvania and New Zealand.

Jackson and frequent collaborators Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh adapted Alice Sebold's novel, which focuses on a young girl who continues to look down upon her family and friends even after she's murdered.

Oscar winner Rachel Weisz was previously announced for the role of the girl's mother, while the industry trade papers are saying that Gosling will play the father.

Most recently seen opposite Anthony Hopkins in the spring thriller "Fracture," Gosling earned his first Academy recognition for "Half Nelson." The "Notebook" and "Stay" star has been notoriously selective and his only upcoming feature is the quirky indie "Lars and the Real Girl."
