Gemma Arterton also casted in Jerry Bruckheimer video game adaptation

On Tuesday (May 20), Disney confirmed what has long been rumored online, that Jake Gyllenhaal will topline its "Prince of Persia" feature.

In addition to the casting of the Oscar nominated actor, Disney announced that Gemma Arterton will follow up her "Quantum of Solace" breakout with a female lead in the video game adaptation.

Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the film, which comes from the Ubisoft smash, and Mike Newell is directing. Disney obviously hopes that the film, fully titled "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," will be a franchise pic in the vein of the Bruckheimer produced "Pirates of the Caribbean" pics.

Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard and Boaz Yakin wrote the script, along with Jordan Melcher, who created the game, which first premiered in 1989 and has spawned myriad sequels and spinoffs.

The trade papers are reporting that the plot revolves around Dastan (Gyllehaal), a sixth-century Persian prince who aims to keep the mystical Sands of Time out of the hands of an evil nobleman. Arterton will play Tamina, a princess.

Gyllenhaal was most recently seen in "Rendition" and "Zodiac." He has "Brothers" set for release later this year, while the dark comedy "Nailed" has been in and out of production this month.
