'Hancock' Soars Over International Box Office
Will Smith vehicle takes in $78.3 million foreign
"Hancock," Smith's latest feature, weathered so-so reviews to top the United States box office for the weekend ending Sunday, July 6 and also dominated the international marketplace.
According to media reports, the dysfunctional superhero saga drew a whopping $78.3 million foreign, playing on 5,444 screens in 50 territories.
"Hancock" had its biggest openings in the United Kingdom ($19.3 million), Germany ($12.4 million) and South Korea ($8.5 million).
Although "Hancock" came in behind only "Iron Man" and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" among international openings this year, there was still plenty of coin for other releases.
Second place went to the animated "Kung Fu Panda," which has now passed $150 million overseas after a $38 million weekend. Disney's "Prince Caspian" was third with $24.3 million, bringing its foreign haul to $194 million.
Last weekend's foreign champ, "Wanted," fell to fourth with a $18.8 million foreign weekend, now standing at $64.2 million overseas. The action flick has done particularly well in "Russia," where its $21.7 million total is already the 10th highest of all-time.
Fifth place went to "Wall-E" with $13 million, still playing in only nine markets.
