While "The Dark Knight" broke box office records domestically, it was a different superhero movie that ruled the international marketplace.

According to media reports, Will Smith's "Hancock" took in $44.8 million on 8,286 foreign screens to lead overseas box office for the weekend ending Sunday, July 20.

"Hancock" has now taken in $253.5 million outside of the United States.

Although it opened in only 20 territories on 4,500 screens, "The Dark Knight" finished second with $40 million. "The Dark Knight" had its biggest non-US opening in Australia with $13.1 million. The Christopher Nolan-directed sequel also had strong returns in Mexico and Brazil, among other countries.

With openings next weekend in Holland, Italy and the United Kingdom, "The Dark Knight" should be ready to top the world next weekend.

Third place foreign was "Kung Fu Panda," playing on 6,525 screens in 58 markets. The animated action-comedy made $27.8 million, bringing its overall foreign cumulative total to a whopping $270 million.

Performing well as counter-programming to the testosterone-laden summer blockbusters is the musical "Mamma Mia!" The ABBA-flavored comedy made $26.8 million on 2,407 screens in 21 countries. In less than two weeks in foreign release, "Mamma Mia!" has made $72.6 million foreign.
