Kaufman's 'Synecdoche' Draws Cast

Hoffman and Williams will help teach America what a synecdoche is

Oscar-winner Charlie Kaufman has recruited a pair of recent Academy darlings to star in his directing debut, titled "Synecdoche."

According to Production Weekly, "Capote" star Philip Seymour Hoffman will topline "Synecdoche," which won't actually begin filming until early next summer.

The project focuses on a playwright and several of the women in his life. Expect Hoffman to play the playwright, while Michelle Williams is attached to play -- and we're just guessing here -- one of the women in his life.

Those who napped through high school English classes or have never been forced to use figurative language in their day-to-day life probably aren't Kaufman's target demographic. Those people, in fact, may be scratching their head about the titular noun, which the handy site dictionary.com opts to define as "A figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole (as hand for sailor), the whole for a part (as the law for police officer), the specific for the general (as cutthroat for assassin), the general for the specific (as thief for pickpocket), or the material for the thing made from it (as steel for sword)."

Kaufman won his Oscar for writing "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." His other credits include "Adaptation" and "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind."

Hoffman followed up his Oscar-winner "Capote" role by playing the baddie in this summer's "Mission: Impossible III." His upcoming credits include "The Savages" and "Charlie Wilson's War," opposite Tom Hanks.

"Dawson's Creek" alum Williams was an Oscar nominee this year for "Brokeback Mountain." She'll next be seen in the indies "The Hottest State" and "The Hawk Is Dying."
