Although " The Dark Knight" held sway over the North American box office for its fourth week out, it was " The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" that reigned over international audiences.

The Brendan Fraser-starring sequel took in a cool $56.1 million at 6,453 screenings in 49 markets, reports Variety.

In the third "Mummy" film, Fraser reprises his role as the swashbuckling Rick O'Connell, who must step in when his son revives the cursed Emperor Han, aka the Dragon Emperor ( Jet Li), who has been buried in clay for millennia. The film also features international stars Michelle Yeoh, Russell Wong and John Hannah.

All told, "Mummy" earned more than its nearest rivals combined -- "Dark Knight's" $35.1 million and "Wall-E's" $18.1 mil.

Also doing well overseas is the ABBA musical " Mamma Mia!," which took in $14.7 million, bringing its foreign total to a hefty $173.4 million.
