The opening week for Marvel's "Iron Man" proved every bit as strong in foreign lands as it was at the domestic box office.

According to Variety, the Paramount-distributed (in most of the world, at least) comic adaptation took in an estimated $96.8 million foreign, playing on 7500 screens in 57 international territories.

That's the largest international weekend since last July and, added to the $104.2 million domestic total for "Iron Man," brings the Robert Downey Jr. vehicle up to $201 million worldwide in very short order.

The leading foreign markets for "Iron Man" were the United Kingdom, with a $10.3 million weekend, and Mexico with $9.6 million.

The trade paper says that "Forbidden Kingdom" was second overseas with roughly $8 million, followed by "Made of Honor" with $6.5 million.

Many of this summer's biggest blockbusters are opening in the United States and abroad simultaneously, a trend that will continue with presumptive blockbusters "Speed Racer," "Prince Caspian" and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" in upcoming weeks.
