Writer-director wants to infuse sci-fi references into relationship story

Kevin Smith is switching from pornos to less risque subject matter for his next comedy.

The "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" writer-director is developing a space comedy centering around a father-son relationship, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The sci-fi genre is one that Smith has yet to explore. It's possible that the film, which is a departure from his usual romantic or "bromantic" formula, will be of interest to Harvey and Bob Weinstein, with whom Smith has collaborated on most of his films.

The film will also reference other science fiction movies.

"Zack and Miri" will be released on Friday, Oct. 31.
