Michael Cunningham is writing the Fox 2000 biopic

Fox 2000 is developing a biopic of British chanteuse Dusty Springfield to be produced by and star Nicole Kidman.

The project will reunite Kidman with Michael Cunningham, whose book "The Hours" (adapted by David Hare) became a vehicle for Kidman's Oscar-winning performance as Virginia Woolf.

Cunningham is writing the script about Springfield, who was dubbed the White Queen of Soul for a string of hits that included "The Look of Love," "Son of a Preacher Man" and "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me."

Her personal life included battles with drug and alcohol abuse, rumors of bisexuality and, ultimately, a losing bout with cancer shortly before her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Springfield's life was interesting enough that the the Kidman project, produced through her Fox-based Blossom Films banner, is just one of two Dusty biopics in the works. Universal has Kristin Chenoweth attached to a project written and directed by Jessica Sharzer.

The Variety story offers no indication of how far along Cunningham is in his script or where the biopic would fit into Kidman's generally busy schedule.

Most recently seen in 2007's "The Invasion," "The Golden Compass" and "Margot at the Wedding," Kidman has "Australia" opening later this year.
