Nothing helps a studio look its best like a new coat of 'Hairspray.'

According to Variety, New Line has asked John Waters to write a treatment for a sequel to the 2007 hit musical based on the hit Broadway show based on his 1988 film.

Got that straight?

The trade paper says that most of the behind-the-scenes creative team on the Golden Globe nominated musical is expected to return. That would include director-choreographer Adam Shankman, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

The 2007 film, which has taken in more than $200 million worldwide, was set in 1962 Baltimore and starred John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Marsden, Amanda Bynes, Elijah Kelley and Allison Janney.

None of those stars had sequel options in their contracts. Variety says, though, that New Line hopes to get the original cast back together and bring the new "Hairspray" to theaters by July 2010.
