'New Moon' rush means director can't return

"Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke won't be returning for the sequel, "New Moon."

According to Variety, the rush to film Stephanie Meyer's vampire sequel -- tentatively slated for release at the end of 2009 or early 2010 -- put Hardwicke and producers Summit Entertainment at odds. Hardwicke reportedly wanted more time to develop the look of the second film. Summit is proceeding without an announced director.

"I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct 'New Moon,'" Hardwicke said in a statement. "Directing 'Twilight' has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel -- it is a great story."

"Twilight" began the love story between teen Bella (Kristen Stewart) and secret vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson). "New Moon" introduces werewolves to the mix, as well as providing a new potential love interest for Bella. As of Dec. 7, the first movie had made just over $138 million.
